Bahrain's milk market volume expanded by over 27% from 60,607 tons in 2018 to a peak of 77,153 tons in 2020, supported by a concurrent rise in imports which grew from 58,055 tons to 72,646 tons.

From 2021, the market entered a sustained contraction, declining by 31% to 52,842 tons in 2023. This downturn coincided with a reduction in imports after 2020 and a sharp, threefold increase in exports, which rose from 5,949 tons in 2020 to 25,375 tons in 2023.

Domestic production remained relatively stable throughout the period, averaging approximately 11,000 tons annually, indicating that trade flows were the primary driver of the significant market size fluctuations.

In 2019, Bahrain's milk production reached its peak at 12 080 tonnes, with the largest annual increase of 9.1% recorded that year. However, production declined in 2020 to 10 456 tonnes, marking a significant drop of 13.4% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production decreased by 10.3%, which translates to an average annual decline of 3.6%.

Following two years of growth, Bahrain's milk production value experienced a downturn. In 2019, it peaked at 17 173 thousand US dollars, with the largest annual increase of 13.0% occurring in 2018. However, in 2020, the value fell sharply to 12 684 thousand US dollars, representing a substantial decrease of 26.1% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, the total decline was 15.8%, averaging an annual rate of 5.6%.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 7.5%, averaging an annual decline of 2.6%.
