The milk market in Fiji measured 27,083 t in 2018 before contracting to 25,208 t in 2019. A further decline to 24,467 t followed in 2020, a period marked globally by the COVID-19 pandemic which disrupted supply chains and dampened international trade flows for dairy products, impacting market access and demand.

Market volume recovered to 25,354 t in 2021. This turnaround coincided with a global economic recovery that supported income growth and consumer spending, alongside strengthened public messaging on the health benefits of milk which bolstered demand. Growth accelerated significantly in 2022, with the market expanding to 29,430 t. This surge was supported by a sustained global consumer trend favoring healthy, sustainable, and convenient dairy products, even as the war in Ukraine raised worldwide feed costs and pressured production economics.

By 2023, the market stabilized at 29,104 t. Global milk production showed only a modest recovery that year, while elevated stock levels in key regions and shifts in international trade policies contributed to balanced market conditions and price stability.

After two years of decline, Fiji's milk production increased in 2020. The country produced 12 393 tonnes of milk that year, marking a 15.1% rise compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production decreased by 4.5%, which translates to an average annual decline of 1.5%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 10 767 tonnes, while the largest year-on-year drop occurred in 2018 with a 9.4% decrease.

Following two years of contraction, Fiji's milk production value saw a slight increase in 2020. The output was valued at 58 228 thousand US dollars, up 1.9% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, however, production value fell by 23.2%, averaging an 8.4% annual decline. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 57 131 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest year-on-year decrease of 16.3%.

In 2020, Fiji exported 740 tonnes of milk, representing a 26.6% increase compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 35%, with an average annual growth rate of 10.5%. The only decline during this period was in 2019, when exports fell by 2.8%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Kiribati, Tonga, and Vanuatu were the top destinations for Fiji's milk exports in volume terms. Kiribati accounted for 27.9% of exports, Tonga for 23.9%, and Vanuatu for 18.6%. Together, these three countries made up 70.4% of Fiji's total milk export flows.

Fiji's milk exports reached 3 476 thousand US dollars in 2020, showing a robust 12.1% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value grew by 8.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 3 101 thousand US dollars, while the highest was in 2018 at 3 490 thousand US dollars. The largest decline occurred in 2019 with an 11.1% drop.

From 2017 to 2020, Tonga, Kiribati, and Vanuatu were the main markets for Fiji's milk exports in value terms. Tonga accounted for 27.0% of export value, Kiribati for 24.9%, and Vanuatu for 22.7%. Combined, these three destinations absorbed 74.6% of Fiji's total milk export value.

Fiji's milk imports declined for the second consecutive year in 2020, reaching 12 814 tonnes, which was 14.7% lower than in 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 7.7%, averaging a 2.6% annual decline. The highest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 15 918 tonnes, which also saw the largest year-on-year increase of 14.7%.

Throughout the 2017-2020 period, New Zealand was the primary source for Fiji's milk imports in volume terms, accounting for 78.7% of total flows. The remaining share was distributed among various smaller markets.

Fiji's milk import value declined for the second year in a row in 2020, reaching 29 108 thousand US dollars, down 11.1% from the previous year. The highest import value was recorded in 2018 at 34 036 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest year-on-year increase of 15.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, New Zealand remained the leading supplier of milk to Fiji in value terms, accounting for 75.8% of total imports. The rest was spread across numerous other countries.
