From 2018 to 2020, the fresh melon market in Western Africa expanded strongly, with total volume rising by over 40% to reach 107.9 thousand tonnes. This growth was paralleled by a surge in domestic production, which increased by nearly 40% over the same two years.

The market entered a contraction phase after 2020, with volume dropping to 90.0 thousand tonnes in 2021 and further to 87.7 thousand tonnes in 2022. During this period, production fell from its peak while exports continued to climb, reaching 21.7 thousand tonnes in 2022.

A partial recovery occurred in 2023 as market volume rose to 93.9 thousand tonnes, supported by production rebounding to 125.1 thousand tonnes. Exports also grew substantially, exceeding 33 thousand tonnes, reflecting the region's increasing role in international melon trade.

Western Africa's melon production has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 120.4 thousand tons of melons, marking a significant 13.7% increase from 2019. After two years of decline, Western Africa's melon export volume rebounded. In 2020, exports totaled 13 609 tons, showing a sharp year-on-year increase of 62.3%. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 10.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.5%. The lowest point was in 2019, with 8 385 tons, which also saw the largest decline of 27.7%.

However, over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 55.1%, averaging an annual decline of 23.4%. The lowest volume was in 2019 at 928 tons, while the largest drop occurred in 2018 with a 54.9% decrease.
