Peru's fresh melon market volume fluctuated between 2018 and 2023, starting at 19 788 т before declining in 2019. A recovery in 2020 was followed by a sharp expansion in 2021, when volume jumped to 25 292 т. After a slight dip in 2022, the market resumed growth, reaching 26 739 т in 2023.

Peru produced 19 808 tonnes of melons in 2020, marking a 7.0% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 4.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.5%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 18 509 tonnes, while the highest was in 2018 at 20 014 tonnes. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, when production fell by 7.5%.

Exports melons from Peru

Exports in kind, t

Melon exports from Peru rose for the second consecutive year in 2020, reaching 299.2 tonnes, which represents a solid 13.5% increase from the previous year. However, over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 22.5%, translating to an average annual decline of 8.2%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 225.5 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 41.6%. In contrast, the largest increase occurred in 2019, with exports growing by 16.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Chile and Italy were the primary markets for Peru's melon exports in volume terms, together accounting for 81.7% of total shipments. Other destinations held relatively smaller shares during this period.

Exports in value, K $ US

In 2020, the value of melon exports from Peru amounted to 110.3 thousand US dollars, showing a sharp contraction of 36.6% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value decreased by 8.5%, with an average annual decline of 2.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 104.2 thousand US dollars, while the highest was in 2019 at 174.1 thousand US dollars. The largest increase occurred in 2019, with export value rising by 67.1%.

During the 2017-2020 period, Italy, Chile, and Ecuador remained the main buyers of Peruvian melons in value terms, accounting for 41.5%, 29.0%, and 14.5% of total exports, respectively. Together, these three markets formed 85.1% of Peru's total melon export value.
