Earlier Report Observations

The melon market in Japan, measured by volume, contracted from 179.6 thousand tons in 2018 to 155.4 thousand tons in 2023. In value terms, the market declined from $1.41 billion to $1.06 billion over the same six-year period, although it experienced a brief resurgence in 2021.

Domestic production followed a similar downward trend, falling from 152.9 thousand tons to 145.2 thousand tons. Imports were nearly halved, dropping from 27.2 thousand tons to 11.3 thousand tons, while exports remained minimal but grew slightly from 0.5 thousand tons to 1.1 thousand tons.

By 2024, the frozen food market in Japan was expanding significantly, driven by consumer demand for convenience and health-oriented options, which could influence the melon segment through frozen fruit products. In 2025, Shizuoka prefecture established advanced production techniques and quality management for greenhouse melons, gaining high recognition in the national market. Ibaraki prefecture maintained its 26-year position as the top melon producer, though consumer brand awareness remained highest for Hokkaido melons.
