The Japanese fig market expanded from 13 401 tons in 2018 to a peak of 14 484 tons in 2022, before settling at 14 444 tons in 2023. This growth was primarily driven by rising imports, which increased from 1 540 tons in 2018 to 1 998 tons in 2023, compensating for fluctuations in domestic production.

In 2022, the market saw the introduction of key agricultural innovations. The release of the 'Reikodai 1号' rootstock, highly resistant to fig wilt disease, helped secure yields by reducing crop losses. Simultaneously, the adoption of new container and hydroponic cultivation techniques improved production efficiency and allowed for more diversified distribution channels.

After 2022, domestic production slightly declined, while import volumes began to taper off from 2024 onward. The overall market volume remained stable, indicating a mature phase with a focus on sustainable production methods and supply chain resilience.
