The Iranian fig market volume rose from 97.8 thousand tons in 2018 to 116.3 thousand tons in 2019, driven by the official recognition of Fars province as the country's largest dried fig producer, which significantly boosted domestic and export demand. Steady export growth reflected strong external markets during this period.

Market volume then contracted sharply to 71.5 thousand tons in 2020 and further to 53.2 thousand tons in 2021. High domestic inflation pressured consumer purchasing power, reducing internal consumption, while currency restrictions and limited banking facilities for exporters hindered competitive overseas sales.

After stabilizing around 53.8 thousand tons in 2022, the market fell to 49.5 thousand tons in 2023 as a surge in exports outpaced production growth. New packaging and labeling rules, along with state investments in large packing plants in Fars, enhanced export capabilities and diverted more output abroad. Updated financial policies and stricter sanitary standards for drying processes in 2024 aimed to further strengthen Iran's position in international fig trade.

The market exhibited significant volatility during this period. Production reached its lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2019, with a 2.6-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Iran produced 86.0 K t of figs, representing a sharp year-over-year decline of 34.0%. The highest production volume was recorded in 2019 at 130.3 K t, while the largest percentage increase occurred in 2018, reaching 120.8%.

Exports figs from Iran

Iran's fig exports grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 14 415 t, marking a 2.7% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports rose by 29.9%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Vietnam was the primary buyer of Iranian figs, accounting for 75.2% of total export volume, while the remaining share was distributed among a diverse group of other countries.

Following two years of growth, Iran's fig export value declined. In 2020, exports totaled 42 580 K $ US, down 12.6% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, export value increased by 54.1%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 15.5%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 48 697 K $ US, which also saw the largest percentage increase of 44.9%.

Throughout 2017-2020, Vietnam remained the leading destination for Iranian fig exports in value terms, capturing 74.5% of total flows, with the rest spread across various smaller markets.
