Melon seed shipments into ECOWAS from abroad increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports were recorded at 53.7 tons, indicating a slight year-over-year increase of 0.7%. Over the 2017–2020 period, imports decreased by 24.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of -8.9%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 32.8 tons, which also saw the largest decline of 53.9%. The largest increase occurred in 2019 at 62.8%.

During 2017–2020, Vietnam, France, and the United States accounted for the largest share of melon seed imports in kind to ECOWAS, with Vietnam at 20.5%, France at 20.4%, and the United States at 18.8%. Together, these three countries comprised 59.6% of total import flows.

After a two-year decline, the volume of melon seed imports into ECOWAS increased. In 2020, import volume totaled 1 489 thousand US dollars, showing a steep increase of 30.3% compared to the previous year.
