Earlier Report Observations

In 2018 and 2019, the U.S. MDF market volume remained stable at around 4 950 thousand m³, supported by growth in residential construction, particularly single-family homes, which drove demand in the furniture and building sectors. However, the market contracted to 4 630 thousand m³ in 2020 as stringent government regulations, including formaldehyde emission limits, began to hinder market expansion.

The market recovered to 5 193 thousand m³ in 2021 due to high demand for furniture, which caused a shortage of MDF and led to price increases in the domestic market. Further growth to 5 558 thousand m³ occurred in 2022, fueled by stricter fire safety regulations that boosted demand for fire-retardant MDF products.

In 2023, the market volume fell to 4 167 thousand m³ amid regulatory pressure from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board, which set maximum formaldehyde emission limits at 0.11 ppm. Manufacturers responded by expanding production capacities and innovating with low-formaldehyde MDF and environmentally friendly adhesives, intensifying competition. By 2024, investments continued with new facilities such as Homanit's planned plant in South Carolina and the launch of ultra-low-emission products by companies like Arauco North America, adapting to environmental standards and consumer preference for sustainable materials.
