Earlier Report Observations

The Spanish margarine market volume contracted significantly from 56.8 тыс. т in 2018 to 33.8 тыс. т in 2020. This decline was driven by a shift in consumer preference toward butter, as margarine faced perception challenges regarding its fat composition and quality.

After a partial recovery to 51.5 тыс. т in 2021, market volume fell sharply to 19.0 тыс. т by 2023. During these years, consumer demand increasingly focused on margarines made with healthier vegetable oils like olive and rapeseed, with product choices influenced by nutritional labeling such as Nutriscore. The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) played a role by evaluating brands and highlighting products with better fat profiles.

In 2024, the market volume grew to 25.9 тыс. т, supported by stable consumer preference for margarines with healthy vegetable oils and the ongoing impact of clean labeling trends.
