Earlier Report Observations

Lithuania's margarine market volume fluctuated between 6.8 thousand tons and 7.7 thousand tons from 2018 to 2024, while its value rose from $9.8 million to $12.5 million. The market volume peaked in 2019, then declined in 2020 and again sharply in 2022 before a partial recovery. Early in the period, a decrease in exports helped maintain domestic product availability.

A pronounced volume contraction to 6.8 thousand tons occurred in 2022, driven by high inflation that made consumers more cautious and by sustained media advertising that portrayed margarine as less healthy than butter, directly reducing consumption. This drop in volume was accompanied by a surge in market value to $13.3 million, reflecting significant price increases during that year.

After 2022, market volume recovered to 7.4 thousand tons by 2024 as consumption patterns stabilized, while market value retreated, indicating a normalization of prices. The growing importance of discount retailers in the Lithuanian retail landscape during this period provided more price-sensitive options, influencing distribution channels.
