The market for mandarins, clementines, tangelos and citrus hybrids in Western Africa expanded significantly from 2018 to 2023. Total market volume grew from 51 045 tons in 2018 to 105 707 tons in 2023, more than doubling over the period. The most notable surge occurred in 2020, when the market jumped by 50% to 79 281 tons, driven by a sharp increase in domestic production.

Domestic production rose from 46 519 tons in 2018 to 73 297 tons in 2023, with a major leap to 70 002 tons in 2020. At the same time, imports climbed steadily, from 4 614 tons in 2018 to 32 428 tons in 2023, indicating growing demand that local output could not fully meet. The import share of the market increased substantially over these years.

In 2024, import volumes continued to rise, reaching 53 437 tons. Globally, citrus markets have been influenced by factors such as the spread of Huanglongbing (HLB) disease, which affects production, and shifting consumer preferences towards convenient, easy-peel varieties like mandarins and clementines. These trends may have indirectly supported the growth of the Western African market.
