In 2022, the Tunisian government implemented specific measures that shaped the market environment. Maximum profit margins for the wholesale and retail sale of dried fruits, including hazelnuts, were officially set to regulate prices and protect consumers. Concurrently, authorities strengthened controls over the artisanal sector, including a crackdown on counterfeit goods, which affected the production and commercialization of hazelnut-based food products.

The market dynamics shifted notably in 2023 due to a global supply shock. A significant drop in world production, particularly in Turkey, led to a dramatic 40-50% price increase for hazelnuts in Tunisia. As Turkey is a key source for imports, this surge in global prices directly impacted the cost and volume of hazelnuts entering the Tunisian market, sustaining the lower import levels seen the previous year.
