Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2023, the Israeli market for mandarins, clementines, tangelos and citrus hybrids showed considerable volatility in both production and domestic consumption. Production in physical terms grew from 174.6 thousand tonnes in 2018 to a high of 211.1 thousand tonnes in 2019, then contracted to 161.4 thousand tonnes in 2021 before recovering to 202.1 thousand tonnes by 2023. The domestic market volume mirrored this pattern, expanding from 42.7 thousand tonnes to 68.5 thousand tonnes in 2020, then falling sharply to 36.6 thousand tonnes in 2021 and gradually climbing back to 44.7 thousand tonnes in 2023.
In value terms, the swings were more pronounced. The production value rose from $165.1 million in 2018 to $220.2 million in 2020, despite lower physical output, suggesting higher unit prices. The domestic market's value peaked at $78.5 million in 2020 before dropping to $42.1 million in 2021. A strong rebound followed, with production value reaching $235.2 million and market value hitting $52.0 million in 2023.
For 2024, export volumes fell significantly to 65.9 thousand tonnes from 157.4 thousand tonnes the previous year. Cultural factors, such as the link between clementines and New Year celebrations among certain communities in Israel, influence seasonal demand patterns for these citrus fruits.
