In 2018, Israeli fresh grape production reached 63 000 metric tons, partly driven by a trade agreement with the United States that removed tariffs on fruit imports. This required local farmers to increase output by 30% to compete with heightened import competition. Market volume then declined over the next two years, falling to 51 879 metric tons in 2020.

The market rebounded strongly, with volume climbing to 73 268 metric tons in 2022. In June 2023, new import licensing rules for fresh fruits and vegetables were formalized under the Plant Protection Law, aiming to balance market access with phytosanitary risks. This regulatory change contributed to a slight reduction in imports and total market volume, which settled at 70 561 metric tons in 2023.

During 2024, winter imports from South Africa continued, while consumer trends showed a growing preference for fresh, locally grown grapes sold directly through farmers’ markets. High retail mark-ups on imported grapes, reported at 153% above import cost, reflected a concentrated food market with significant barriers to competition.
