Earlier Report Observations

The mandarin, clementine, and citrus hybrid market in the CIS grew from 1 029 thousand tons in 2018 to 1 097 thousand tons in 2020. This expansion was supported by Russia's position as the world's largest consumer, absorbing about one-fifth of global exports, and by increased citrus exports from Southern Hemisphere countries to the European market in 2019, which improved import availability for the region.

After a period of stabilization around 1 080-1 084 thousand tons in 2021-2022, the market volume jumped to 1 153 thousand tons in 2023. This sharp rise was driven by a shift in import sources: logistical disruptions and a reduction in supplies from Morocco were offset by larger shipments from Turkey and China, which replenished market volumes. During this period, consumer preference also began shifting towards sweeter, seedless hybrid varieties like clementines and tangelos.

In 2024, the market continued to be shaped by trade flow adjustments. Supplies from Morocco nearly halted due to sanctions, while Turkey's shipments to Russia also contracted. These reductions were partially balanced by increased imports from Egypt and Abkhazia. Concurrently, a new Polish regulation requiring origin labeling on price tags for fruit and vegetables introduced additional regional trade considerations.
