The malt market in Morocco experienced considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023. Market volume peaked at 24 thousand tonnes in 2018 but contracted sharply to 16 thousand tonnes in 2020, primarily due to production and distribution disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. A partial recovery followed, with volume reaching over 19 thousand tonnes in 2022, supported by a surge in imports facilitated by the government's liberalization of exchange regulations.

Underlying agricultural policies like the Green Morocco Plan provided a stable foundation for the sector. However, the market remained exposed to external and domestic supply shocks. A decisive factor was the 43% drop in national cereal production for the 2023-2024 season, which severely constrained the availability of raw materials like barley, leading to a renewed decline in malt market volume to 16.8 thousand tonnes in 2023. Concurrently, the market navigated sustained periods of high imported raw material costs and broader inflationary pressures.
