From 2018 to 2020, Algeria's malt market volume contracted from 29 thousand tons to 20.8 thousand tons. This decline was driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, which altered consumption patterns and disrupted global barley supplies, leading to a 10% drop in world malt sales that reduced imports. Tensions on the global barley market due to geopolitical and climatic events further constrained availability.

The market recovered from 2021, reaching 25.3 thousand tons and growing to 28.7 thousand tons by 2023. Growth was fueled by steady demand from the domestic non-alcoholic beverage sector, which includes about 700 companies, and continued heavy reliance on imports due to insufficient local grain production. Global malt leaders like Malteurop increased investments in production capacity, influencing import flows into Algeria.

Algeria's dependence on malt imports persisted, with volumes reaching 32.8 thousand tons in 2024. Climatic constraints and limited arable land and water resources continued to restrict local output, sustaining high import demand despite government efforts to boost agricultural self-sufficiency through national plans and bilateral cooperation.

Algeria's malt production declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 8 883 tonnes of malt, which represents a 12.7% decrease compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production actually grew by 33.1%, averaging an annual increase of 10.0%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 10 266 tonnes, with that year also seeing the largest growth surge of 53.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Belgium (39.4% of imports in kind), France (39.4% of imports in kind), and Egypt (16.2% of imports in kind) led the ranking of malt suppliers to Algeria. Together, these three countries accounted for 95.1% of all imports in kind during this period.

During the 2017-2020 period, France (37.5% of imports in value terms), Belgium (37.5% of imports in value terms), and Egypt (20.2% of imports in value terms) consistently remained the main sources for Algeria's malt imports.
