Maize starch production in Ukraine began the period at 747 thousand tons in 2018, boosted by a record corn harvest that provided abundant raw material. Output remained stable near 750 thousand tons through 2020, a period marked by industry preparations for new capacity, including the anticipated launch of a major processing plant in Yahotyn, signaling increased investment in the sector.

A sharp rise in demand for corn processing products, both domestically and for export, propelled production to 1 025 thousand tons in 2021. This growth was abruptly interrupted in 2022 when the war and the blockade of seaports severely disrupted supply chains and logistics, causing output to plummet to 536 thousand tons.

The downturn continued into 2023, with production declining further to 432 thousand tons, reflecting the market's ongoing adaptation to the challenging conditions caused by the conflict.

Following two years of growth, maize starch production in Ukraine experienced a decline. In 2020, Ukraine produced 745.5 K t of maize starch, marking a slight decrease of 1.0% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 2.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 0.8%. The peak was reached in 2019 at 753.0 K t, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 2.5%.

Maize starch production in Ukraine grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 281.0 M $ US, representing an 8.0% increase from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production expanded by 26.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 8.3%.

Exports maize starch to Ukraine

Exports in kind, t

In 2020, Ukraine exported 74 433 t of maize starch, showing a controlled decline of 10.0% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports increased by 21.7%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 6.8%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2018 at 60 630 t, while the highest was in 2019 at 82 698 t, with the largest annual increase also occurring in 2019 at 36.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia were consistently the main destinations for Ukraine's maize starch exports in kind, accounting for 34.0%, 16.0%, and 11.6% of exports, respectively. Together, they represented 61.6% of total export flows.

Exports in value, K $ US

After two years of gains, maize starch exports from Ukraine declined. In 2020, exports stood at 28 056 K $ US, reflecting a 1.8% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 50.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 14.7%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 28 581 K $ US, with the largest annual increase also in 2019 at 38.6%.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia formed the core of Ukraine's maize starch exports in value terms, representing 31.2%, 15.4%, and 11.1% of exports, respectively. Collectively, they accounted for 57.7% of total export flows.

Maize starch imports into Ukraine declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 1 028 t, down by 11.9% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 90.4%, equating to an annualized rate of 54.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia and Indonesia were the dominant suppliers of maize starch to Ukraine, together accounting for 83.9% of total imports in kind, with other partners playing a less significant role.

After a two-year drop, maize starch imports into Ukraine increased. In 2020, Ukraine imported 1 517 K $ US of maize starch, indicating a 20.2% advance compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 66.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 30.5%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 1 263 K $ US, with the largest annual decline also in 2019 at 69.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia, Germany, and Indonesia were the principal sources for Ukraine's maize starch imports in value terms, accounting for 43.7%, 29.0%, and 13.8% of imports, respectively. Jointly, they represented 86.6% of total import flows.
