The Turkish maize market expanded from 8.02 million tonnes in 2018 to 9.66 million tonnes in 2019, driven by rising animal feed demand from the livestock sector, which boosted imports. Production also increased as favorable weather and planting area changes supported output. In 2020, the market contracted to 8.40 million tonnes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which stabilized feed sector production and reduced import flows.

A pre-Eid al-Adha surge in demand for sacrificial animals and silage contributed to a modest market recovery to 8.75 million tonnes in 2021. The following year saw a sharp jump to 11.35 million tonnes, fueled by a 25.9% rise in domestic production to 8.5 million tonnes, encouraged by the Grain Board's (TMO) announced purchase price of 5 700 TL per tonne, alongside substantial imports. In 2023, despite record production of 9 million tonnes, the market volume fell to 8.36 million tonnes as strengthened trade relations with Egypt and other markets led to a quadrupling of exports, diverting supply abroad.

Maize production in Turkey increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Turkey produced 6 500 K t of maize, marking an 8.3% increase compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 10.2%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 3.3%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 5 700 K t, which also saw the largest decline of 3.4%.

After a two-year decrease, Turkey's maize production value increased. In 2020, maize output was valued at 1 943 M $ US, representing a significant advance of 29.2% over the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production value rose by 18.4%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.8%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 1 504 M $ US, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 at 6.4%.

Exports maize to Turkey

Turkey exported 405 K t of maize in 2020, amounting to a 41.5% decrease compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 46.3%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -18.7%. The largest increase was recorded in 2019 at 27.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Iraq (53.1% of exports in kind), Syria (19.9% of exports in kind), and the United States (12.5% of exports in kind) consistently held leading positions in Turkey's export structure for maize, jointly accounting for 85.5% of total flows.

In 2020, maize exports from Turkey amounted to 121.0 M $ US, marking a sharp decline of 30.2% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 42.3%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -16.8%. The largest increase was recorded in 2019 at 18.1%.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, Iraq (42.3% of exports in value terms), Syria (16.0% of exports in value terms), and the United States (13.7% of exports in value terms) formed the key group of partners for Turkey's maize exports by value, jointly representing 72.0% of total flows.

After a two-year gain, Turkey's maize import volume declined. In 2020, imports amounted to 2 300 K t, equivalent to a 47.1% year-over-year decrease. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 17.2%, equating to an annualized rate of -6.1%. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 4 347 K t, which also saw the largest increase of 51.8%.

After a two-year increase, foreign maize supplies to Turkey declined. In 2020, Turkey imported 485.4 M $ US of maize, corresponding to a 42.7% year-over-year decrease. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 15%, equating to an annualized rate of -5.3%. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 847.5 M $ US, which also saw the largest increase of 42.4%.
