Earlier Report Observations

Austrian maize production began the period at 2.1 million tons in 2018, supported by favorable rainfall conditions in Lower Austria that boosted yields. Output continued to grow steadily, reaching a peak of 2.4 million tons in 2021, while the overall market volume expanded to over 3 million tons that same year, reflecting consistent demand.

A sharp reversal occurred in 2022 when unfavorable weather, particularly heavy July rains in key growing regions like Lower Austria and Styria, damaged crops and led to a 13% production decline to 2.1 million tons. This weather-driven drop in domestic supply contributed to a corresponding contraction in the total market volume.

In 2023, despite near-record planting area, production remained flat at 2.1 million tons as wet, delayed sowing and a dry September maturation period hampered output. The market volume fell sharply to 2.3 million tons, primarily due to a 43% collapse in imports. The period saw new seed suppliers like Probstdorfer with the Brevant brand enter the market, promoting early-order discounts. For 2024, global factors such as resumed Ukrainian exports and record world harvests eased supply pressures, while extreme summer weather in Austria posed risks to yields, influencing trade flows as imports recovered.
