The Caribbean maize market volume peaked in 2019 at 3.3 million tons. A consistent multi-year decline followed, reducing the total market size to 2.3 million tons by 2023.

This contraction was driven by reductions in both domestic production and imports. Local output fell from 629 thousand tons in 2018 to 416 thousand tons in 2023, while imports, which form the largest part of supply, dropped from 2.7 million tons in 2019 to 1.9 million tons in 2023.

Imports showed a partial recovery in 2024, rising to 2.0 million tons.

Maize production in the Caribbean has declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, 443.8 K t of maize were produced, marking a 20.1% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 31.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of -11.8%.

Exports maize from Caribbean

The market exhibited volatility during the observed period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2019 at 1 K t, then surged to 3 K t in 2020, representing a dramatic 253.1% increase year-over-year. The variation from the high in 2017 to the low in 2019 was 13.5-fold, with the largest decline of 80.4% occurring in 2019.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States, Egypt, and Guyana consistently held leading positions in the country structure of exports in kind. The United States accounted for 17.7% of exports, Egypt for 9.2%, and Guyana for 8.2%, together making up 35.2% of total flows.

Exports in value, M $ US

Maize exports from the Caribbean increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 1.6 M $ US, which is 41.9% higher than the previous year. However, between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 41.9%, equating to an annualized rate of -16.5%. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 1.0 M $ US, with the largest decline of 62.7% also occurring that year.

During 2017–2020, three main markets—the United States, Suriname, and Egypt—collectively absorbed 15.8% of the total export value of maize from the Caribbean.

In 2020, the Caribbean's maize import volume was 2 476 K t, reflecting a controlled drop of 9.2% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 9.8%, with an annualized rate of -3.4%. The largest increase of 6.3% was recorded in 2019.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States, Brazil, and Argentina dominated the structure of imports in kind. The United States accounted for 44.1% of imports, Brazil for 28.2%, and Argentina for 26.8%, together representing 99.1% of total flows.

After a two-year advance, imported maize volumes in the Caribbean declined. In 2020, imports stood at 522.1 M $ US, reflecting a notable fall of 12.3% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 4.4%, with an annualized rate of -1.5%. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 595.2 M $ US, when the largest increase of 6.6% occurred.
