Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, the market for maize bran, sharps and residues in MERCOSUR remained relatively stable, fluctuating between 757.5 and 815.8 thousand tons. Production was the dominant component, peaking at 880.3 thousand tons in 2020, while imports gradually increased and exports showed variability.

A sharp turn occurred in 2022, when the market volume dropped to 452.6 thousand tons, followed by a further plunge to 143.9 thousand tons in 2023. This dramatic contraction was primarily driven by an explosive rise in exports, which surged from 80.3 thousand tons in 2021 to 397.6 thousand tons in 2022 and then to 681.2 thousand tons in 2023. Over the same period, production declined steadily.

By 2023, the market had shrunk to a fraction of its earlier size, reflecting a major shift toward external demand. Production fell to 747.9 thousand tons, while imports remained moderate at 77.2 thousand tons, unable to offset the outflow from heightened export activity.
