Earlier Report Observations

Production of maize bran, sharps and residues in Argentina showed moderate fluctuations from 2018 to 2020. The market was initially supported by the consistent use of these by-products in animal feed and within the circular economy framework, where agricultural residues were valorized for energy generation. After reaching 178.8 thousand tons in 2019, output dipped to 173.3 thousand tons in 2020.

The market recovered in 2021 and 2022, with production climbing to 181.5 thousand tons. This growth was driven by rising demand for maize bran in animal nutrition, fueled by trends toward natural and healthy ingredients, and the emergence of a novel segment: biodegradable cutlery and edible tableware made from maize bran, which added a new outlet for the material.

In 2023, production fell sharply to 158.0 thousand tons. This decline coincided with the Argentine government signing a protocol to export maize to China, which boosted grain exports and likely reduced domestic processing, thereby affecting the availability of milling residues. Regulatory developments in 2024 included Decree 1/2025 on valorized non-hazardous wastes, which formalizes rules for using agricultural by-products.
