The Dutch magnesite market volume contracted significantly from 349 thousand tons in 2018 to 200 thousand tons in 2022. This decline was primarily driven by regulatory changes that increased operational costs. In 2019, the waste tax more than doubled to €32.12 per ton, raising the expense of processing raw materials like magnesium carbonate. Concurrently, tightening environmental rules on pesticide use by 2021 reduced agricultural applications of magnesite. By 2022, diminishing domestic processing capacity forced more cross-border waste handling, adding logistical burdens and CO₂-related charges to production.

Despite the downturn, market participants pursued strategic initiatives. Magnesium & Minerals B.V. expanded its product range and export activities in 2018-2019, introducing its EcoLife-Nature quality mark. In later years, the focus shifted toward circular economy principles; from 2023 onward, sustainability and innovation gained prominence across Dutch industry. By 2025, the upcoming decision on reporting very hazardous substances and the Nedmag CEO's emphasis on building a high-quality magnesium salt industry highlighted the sector's evolving regulatory and strategic landscape.

The Netherlands experienced a third consecutive year of declining magnesite production. In 2021, output reached 242.0 K t, showing minimal change compared to 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, production fell by 30.7%, with an average annual decline of 11.5%.
