The magnesium carbonate market in Southern Europe contracted from 1 186 thousand tons in 2018 to 886 thousand tons in 2020. In 2018, Russian Mining Chemical Company (RMCC) initiated production of highly active magnesium oxide and expanded its line of premium magnesium compounds, including calcined magnesite, increasing global supply of these materials.

Market volume recovered to 1 028 thousand tons in 2021 before a slight stabilization at 980 thousand tons in 2022, while market value rose from 278.8 million USD in 2021 to 286.9 million USD in 2022. During this period, the global export market for magnesium carbonate remained relatively concentrated among a limited group of countries.

By 2023, growing demand for natural food-grade additives was driving the magnesium derivatives segment, with magnesium carbonate holding a dominant share. In Spain, brands like Ana María Lajusticia and DRASANVI launched new powder and tablet magnesium carbonate products. The following year, regulatory shifts favoring natural ingredients progressed, and in Portugal, Jaba Recordati's innovative Magnésio Supremo® supplement received the Product of the Year 2024 award.

Southern Europe's magnesite production has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 901 K t of magnesite, which represents a 9.9% decrease compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 30.1%, translating to an average annual decline of 11.2%.

Magnesite production in Southern Europe has dropped for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 232.0 M $ US, showing a slight year-over-year decrease of 0.8%. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 32.4%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -12.2%.

Exports magnesite from Southern Europe

After two years of growth, magnesite exports from Southern Europe declined. In 2020, exports totaled 59 984 t, marking a gradual 4.0% decrease from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 109.1%, with a CAGR of 27.9%. The peak was recorded in 2019 at 62 505 t, which also saw the largest annual increase of 68.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, France (25.1% of exports in kind), Ireland (17.1%), and the United Kingdom (14.5%) were the top contributors to exports in kind, together accounting for 56.7% of total flows.

Magnesite exports from Southern Europe have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 15 442 K $ US, reflecting a moderate 5.7% rise from the year before. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 102.2%, with a CAGR of 26.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, France (23.8% of exports in value terms), the Netherlands (15.5%), and Ireland (15.3%) emerged as the main markets for exports in value terms, collectively representing 54.6% of total flows.

Imports magnesite to Southern Europe

The market exhibited volatility during the observed period. Imports reached their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2019, with a 4.4-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Southern Europe imported 44 572 t of magnesite, showing a modest 4.5% decrease compared to 2019. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 46 669 t, which also experienced the largest annual increase of 145.0%.

During 2017-2020, Turkey (64.3% of imports in kind), Pakistan (14.6%), and Saudi Arabia (2.1%) remained the primary suppliers of magnesite to Southern Europe, together forming 81.0% of total imports in kind.
