Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2022, magnesite production in the Americas fell from 3 238 thousand tons to 2 217 thousand tons, with a steep drop occurring in 2020. Market volume followed a similar path, declining to 2 214 thousand tons in 2022 from 3 239 thousand tons in 2018.

In 2019, Omya launched Omya Magprill, a granule combining magnesium carbonate and calcium carbonate for soil and agricultural applications, expanding its product portfolio in this segment. The market contraction in 2020 was followed by a modest recovery in 2021-2022. This recovery coincided with Graymont Ltd. acquiring a limestone quarry to secure raw material supply for magnesium carbonate production, enhancing its operational capabilities. Additionally, the Canadian government announced a Critical Minerals Strategy with CAD 3.8 billion in funding to expand domestic mineral processing, including magnesite, supporting regional supply.

For the later years of the period, factors such as continued research into ore characteristics, growing demand from pharmaceutical and construction sectors, and a strong emphasis on eco-friendly production methods and sustainability initiatives were noted. Environmental regulations and the emergence of new applications, including in nanotechnology and bone health supplements, continued to influence the market landscape.
