Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2021, m-xylene production in Russia declined from 272.2 thousand tons to 200.5 thousand tons. This drop was primarily driven by a 19.6% decrease in producer prices, reflecting weakened demand, alongside geopolitical sanctions and logistics restrictions that hampered trade. A temporary 2.6% increase in 2020 was supported by a 14.8% production surge in November, partially offsetting the moderate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the 2022-2023 period, output stabilized near 190-198 thousand tons. The exit of Western companies from the market stimulated domestic producers and new entrants, while rising demand for m-xylene derivatives in protective equipment and e-commerce packaging provided underlying support. Continued geopolitical pressure, currency fluctuations, and sanctions, however, led to a further 3.9% contraction in 2023.
Production recovered from 2024, reaching 206 thousand tons in 2025. This growth was fueled by the ongoing development of domestic production and import substitution within the chemical industry. The introduction of digital tracking and labeling systems also enhanced supply chain efficiency, supporting the market's expansion.
