Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the liquid egg market volume in Eastern Africa contracted by over 15%, falling from 542 tons to 457 tons. This decline was driven by a surge in cheaper imports from Uganda, which benefited from subsidized production costs, and persistently high local feed expenses that made Kenyan farmers less competitive. The government's initial adherence to free trade principles under the East African Community’s Common Market Protocol allowed imports to flow, prompting local farmers to reduce stock and protest low prices.

Market volume continued to shrink through 2022, reaching a low of 324 tons, even after the government imposed import levies in 2019 and again intervened in 2021 to control imports and stabilize domestic prices. High export volumes during this period further reduced local availability. A turning point came in 2023 when a rapid approximately 30% surge in chicken feed costs over six months forced farmers to scale down flocks, creating egg scarcity and driving up prices. This supply constraint, combined with ongoing import levies, contributed to a market recovery to 411 tons, supported by lower export levels and increased imports.
