Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, the dried eggs market in Eastern Africa contracted, with production falling from 162.8 tons to 142.9 tons and market size dropping from 228.4 tons to 154.1 tons. This was followed by a sharp recovery in 2022, when production jumped to 205.7 tons and the market expanded to 256.1 tons, before edging down to 242.5 tons in 2023.

In recent years, supply-side challenges have affected the market. Rising chicken feed costs forced poultry farmers to reduce stock, leading to egg scarcity and higher prices, which indirectly pressured dried egg production. Excessive imports created an artificial glut that impacted local producers, though import volumes have since declined. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development's focus on food security and the emergence of new chicken breeds aimed at improving efficiency are also shaping the poultry sector.
