Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2023, the market volume for linseed oil and fractions in Sub-Saharan Africa showed considerable fluctuation. It surged from 76 097 tonnes in 2018 to 99 902 tonnes in 2019, driven primarily by a sharp increase in imports, which more than doubled. This peak was followed by a sustained period of contraction.
From 2020, the market entered a decline, with volume dropping to 96 781 tonnes. This downturn was linked to a broader regional trend of reduced linseed oil consumption, as users increasingly substituted it with alternatives like soybean oil. The shift in demand contributed to a further decrease in market size, which fell to 78 694 tonnes by 2022.
The market demonstrated a partial recovery in 2023, rising to 87 814 tonnes. Throughout the period, domestic production remained subdued, declining from initial levels and stabilizing around 30 000 tonnes after 2020.
