Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2019, the soybean oil market in Sub-Saharan Africa shifted toward domestic production. In South Africa, increased soybean cultivation and processing capacity expansion, driven by demand from the food industry and animal feed sector, raised local output. This began to replace imports, leading to a decrease in total market volume from 1 129 thousand tons in 2018 to 1 005 thousand tons in 2019.
Market volume then fluctuated, peaking at 1 330 thousand tons in 2020 before dipping to 1 182 thousand tons in 2021 and recovering to 1 224 thousand tons in 2022.
By 2023, the market surged to 1 688 thousand tons, supported by global technological advancements in soybean refining and genetically modified varieties that improved yields and quality. Concurrently, growing consumer preference for non-GMO and organic soybean oil due to health and environmental concerns bolstered demand. Initiatives in Kenya and other countries to boost local oilseed production were also launched to reduce import dependency.
