The market for lemons and limes in Madagascar experienced a gradual contraction from 4 537 t in 2018 to 4 369 t in 2023. This period began with the launch of the PAPRIZ project, which aimed to industrialize the agricultural sector, strengthen farmer capacities, and improve seed access, thereby providing foundational support to the citrus value chain.

Local processing and diversification initiatives gained momentum in 2021, including the production of concentrated lemon juices and the distribution of young lemon plants to women's cooperatives. These efforts focused on adding value and promoting local consumption, though the overall market volume continued its downward trend, reaching 4 346 t that year.

After a brief recovery to 4 427 t in 2022, the market volume softened again to 4 369 t in 2023, marking an overall decline across the six-year span.

Madagascar's production of lemons and limes has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 4 447 tonnes, marking a 1.4% decrease from 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production fell by 2.8%, which translates to an average annual decline of 1.0%.
