Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh or chilled leguminous vegetables in Qatar more than halved between 2018 and 2023, declining from 3 768 tons to 1 707 tons. This contraction was led by a steady fall in imports, which dropped from 3 445 tons to 1 422 tons over the same period, with the most pronounced yearly decrease of 40% occurring in 2023.

Domestic production varied throughout these years, reaching a peak of 313 tons in 2021 but remaining a minor part of total supply compared to imports. By 2024, import volumes showed a strong rebound, rising to 2 917 tons.

Several developments influenced the market in 2024. GCC import regulations for fresh vegetables, requiring electronic licensing and proof of refrigerated storage and transport, continued to shape import flows. At the same time, a directive to reduce plastic packaging for fresh vegetables strengthened demand among environmentally aware consumers, while growing health awareness and shifting preferences supported interest in locally grown produce.
