The market for legume bran and residues in Nepal expanded from 28 321 metric tons in 2018 to 39 573 metric tons in 2021. This growth coincided with the adoption of improved crop management practices that emphasized residue retention, enhancing the availability of these by-products. Public focus on pesticide residue limits also led to stricter safety regulations, further integrating residue management into the agricultural system. In 2021, the use of nutrient management strategies that combined residues with fertilizers helped boost yields, increasing the supply of legume processing residues.

After reaching a peak in 2021, the market volume contracted to 35 081 metric tons in 2022 and to 33 326 metric tons in 2023. In 2023, the government introduced initiatives promoting millets and indigenous crops through conditional grants to provinces, a policy shift that could indirectly influence the market for legume residues by encouraging crop diversification.

Nepal's production of legume bran, sharps, and residues grew for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 36 230 tonnes, marking a 9.1% year-on-year increase. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 16.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.2%. The lowest output was in 2018 at 30 414 tonnes, which saw the largest decline of 2.3%. The biggest increase occurred in 2019, also at 9.1%.

Nepal's exports of legume bran, sharps, and residues fell for the second consecutive year. In 2019, export volume stood at 280 tonnes, a sharp drop of 86.6% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2019, exports decreased by 89.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of -53.2%.
