From 2018 to 2020, the market for legume bran and residues in Angola remained relatively stable, hovering around 5 700 t. A slight increase to 5 734 t in 2019 was supported by a 5.5% growth in legume and oilseed production, despite drought in the southern and eastern regions. However, limited agricultural mechanization, with only 28% of cultivated land prepared using animal or mechanical traction, restrained more significant expansion. The market volume dipped slightly to 5 673 t in 2020 as the government prioritized cereal cultivation to reduce imports, while persistent technical and infrastructural challenges, including a shortage of trained personnel and manufacturing units for agricultural equipment, continued to constrain output.

The market surged sharply to 7 218 t in 2021, driven primarily by a large import volume of 1 253 t, which compensated for insufficient local supply to meet the needs of the food industry. Although overall agricultural production grew, a lack of financial and technical support for producers persisted. In 2022, the market contracted to 6 100 t as imports plummeted to just 32 t, despite domestic legume and oilseed production growing by 5.8%. Significant price increases for national agricultural products influenced consumption patterns during this period. Recovery followed in 2023, with the market reaching 7 147 t as imports rose again to 877 t and domestic production continued to grow, supported by the expansion of sown area for legumes and oilseeds in both family and commercial farms.

Factors for 2024 point to a continued 5.8% increase in legume and oilseed production for the 2024-2025 agricultural campaign, reflecting government efforts to support family farming and establish reference prices to stabilize supply. However, challenges remain, including high domestic inflation impacting consumption and competitiveness issues for local products like bran against imports.
