The Slovak market for lard and poultry fats grew steadily from 34 413 tonnes in 2018 to 44 350 tonnes in 2021. This expansion was driven by changing consumer preferences towards healthier eating, which increased interest in fats with lower saturated content, and was significantly accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic as heightened home cooking boosted demand for these staples. The trend towards preventive health and the introduction of new product segments with functional components further supported growth in 2021.

Market volume then contracted to 42 640 tonnes in 2022 and 37 492 tonnes in 2023. The decline was primarily caused by increased prices of oils and fats due to inflation and global supply chain pressures, which reduced consumer purchasing. A sustained shift in consumer preferences towards healthier fats and growing interest in plant-based alternatives also contributed to lower demand for traditional animal fats.

Slovakia's production of lard and poultry fats saw a two-year increase before declining. In 2020, the country produced 15 775 tonnes, marking a moderate decrease of 7.7% compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 19.9%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 6.2%. The peak production was recorded in 2019 at 17 100 tonnes, while the largest year-on-year increase occurred in 2018 with a 15.2% rise.

Slovakia's imports of lard and poultry fats have increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country imported 23 955 tonnes, representing a 13.5% year-on-year growth. Over the four-year span from 2017 to 2020, imports rose by 19.7%, averaging an annualized increase of 6.2%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 19 257 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 3.8% during that period.

From 2017 to 2020, Hungary and Austria were the dominant sources for Slovakia's imports of lard and poultry fats in volume terms, together accounting for 85.0% of total imports. The remaining 15.0% was distributed among various other countries.

The value of Slovakia's lard and poultry fats imports has risen for two consecutive years. In 2020, imports reached 8 938 thousand US dollars, up by 28.0% compared to 2019. However, over the entire period from 2017 to 2020, import value decreased by 7.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of -2.7%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 6 766 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the most significant drop of 30.3%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Hungary, Austria, and Poland were the main suppliers of lard and poultry fats to Slovakia in value terms. Hungary contributed 46.1% of imports, Austria 27.2%, and Poland 6.6%, collectively making up 80.0% of total import value during this period.
