From 2018 to 2021, production of lard and poultry fats in Croatia increased from 9 000 t to 10 500 t, while the market volume grew from 8 387 t to 10 357 t. This expansion occurred alongside the implementation of control measures for African swine fever, which established restriction and surveillance zones to contain the disease's spread. Regulatory updates, including new farm registration rules and the Law on Breeding of Domestic Animals, further shaped the industry during this period.

A reversal followed in 2022 and 2023, with production falling to 9 300 t and market volume declining to 8 895 t. This downturn coincided with the continued enforcement of African swine fever controls and the rollout of state aid programs designed to compensate for losses in pig farming. Specifically, the 2023 income support scheme for pig producers aimed to mitigate the financial impact of disease containment measures.

In 2024, authorities lifted certain African swine fever protection zones while maintaining overall controls. The state support program for the livestock sector for 2024–2026 introduced compensation for slaughterhouses and pork processors affected by the disease. A separate initiative to promote native poultry breeds was also launched, reflecting broader efforts to stabilize the market, supported by a reported increase in the number of pigs slaughtered in 2024.

In 2020, output was valued at 7 605 thousand US dollars, representing a significant 31.8% increase compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production value increased by 38.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 11.4%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 5 297 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 3.8%.
