Lard and poultry fats production in Africa has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Africa produced 14 221 tonnes of lard and poultry fats, which is 9.5% higher than the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 2.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 0.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 12 662 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 9.0%.

Lard and poultry fats exports from Africa have risen for the third consecutive year. In 2020, Africa exported 4 005 tonnes of lard and poultry fats, representing a 4.4% increase compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports surged by 897%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 115.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Chile, Spain, and France were the key export partners for lard and poultry fats in kind. Chile accounted for 30.5% of exports, Spain for 26.8%, and France for 14.3%, together making up 71.6% of total export flows.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, Chile, Spain, and the Netherlands were the primary destinations for lard and poultry fats exports in value terms. Chile represented 30.1% of exports, Spain 22.1%, and the Netherlands 10.9%, collectively accounting for 63.2% of total export flows.

The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 1 474 tonnes, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 42.2%.
