Domestic production followed a volatile path, falling from 235.5 thousand tonnes in 2018 to a low of 210.5 thousand tonnes in 2020 before partly rebounding. Concurrently, import volumes more than doubled from 8.7 thousand tonnes in 2018 to a high of 17.6 thousand tonnes in 2022, while exports surged exceptionally in 2019 before returning to more typical levels in subsequent years.

In 2020, the region produced 210 500 tonnes, which represents a 7.4% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 2.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 0.9%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 235 500 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 14.8%.

The market exhibited volatility throughout the observed period. Export volumes reached their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2019, with the peak being 3.2 times higher than the low. In 2020, in-shell walnut deliveries from Eastern Europe, including Northern Asia, totaled 12 250 tonnes, marking a significant decline of 62.8% from the previous year. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 32 899 tonnes, which also experienced the largest annual increase of 144.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey, Iraq, and Azerbaijan remained the top buyers of in-shell walnuts from Eastern Europe, including Northern Asia. Turkey accounted for 47.8% of exports in kind, Iraq for 10.6%, and Azerbaijan for 8.4%. Together, these three countries represented 66.8% of total exports in kind during this period.
