The market for in-shell cashew nuts in Brazil began the period with a volume of 153.9 thousand tonnes in 2018. A decline to 143.3 thousand tonnes by 2020 was directly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted global distribution channels and reduced the availability of finished products in the domestic market.

A strong recovery followed, with market volume expanding to 170.5 thousand tonnes in 2021 and peaking at 243.2 thousand tonnes in 2022. This growth was primarily driven by rising local demand for cashews as a healthy and sustainable food, which boosted domestic consumption and export activity. Concurrently, shifts in global market competitiveness, with Vietnam leading in productivity, affected the trade environment.

In 2023, the market contracted to 189.2 thousand tonnes. This decrease was a direct result of a lower cashew nut harvest in Brazil that year, which constrained supply.

South America's in-shell cashew nut production declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, output reached 143.8 thousand tonnes, showing little change from the previous year. Production peaked in 2018 at 147.5 thousand tonnes, with the largest annual increase of 4.5% recorded that year. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, when production fell by 2.1%.

Exports in-shell cashew nuts from South America

Exports in kind, t

South America's in-shell cashew nut exports grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 524 tonnes, marking a substantial 200.5% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports surged by 948.1%, translating to a compound annual growth rate of 118.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, China, India, and Vietnam were the primary destinations for South America's in-shell cashew nut exports. China accounted for 49.9% of export volumes, India for 28.4%, and Vietnam for 11.7%. Together, these three markets represented 90.1% of total export flows.

The export market for in-shell cashew nuts from South America showed volatility during the observed period.
