Earlier Report Observations

The fresh cherry market volume in South America increased from 63.5 thousand tons in 2018 to 68.4 thousand tons in 2019, supported by expanded planted area and new varieties that raised production. Record exports to China, facilitated by industry associations, also characterized the period. Market volume then fell to 59.9 thousand tons in 2020.

From 2021, the market entered a phase of rapid expansion, reaching 119.8 thousand tons in 2023. This growth was directly driven by a large-scale increase in planted area, which reached over 76 thousand hectares, and sustained demand from China where cherries are seen as a status symbol. Diversification into other export markets like the United States and investments in quality control and logistics further supported the market's expansion.
