Between 2018 and 2020, the Italian in-shell almond market volume showed moderate fluctuations, reaching a high of 82 085 t in 2020 before contracting sharply to 70 253 t in 2021.

A recovery commenced in 2022 as market volume grew to 73 492 t. This was driven by a 4.1% increase in domestic almond production, which occurred despite intense price competition from Californian and Spanish producers whose dumping practices threatened the abandonment of orchards in Sicily and Apulia. During this period, demand for higher-quality Italian organic almonds also grew among European consumers.

The market expansion continued into 2023, with volume rising to 77 789 t. Almond prices increased by 15-20% due to stronger demand and international supply constraints, prompting Italian companies to invest in sustainable practices like drip irrigation. In 2024, the industry prepared for new EU origin-labeling rules for shelled nuts, including almonds, set to enhance transparency from January 2025.

Italy produced 80 520 tonnes of in-shell almonds in 2020, marking a moderate increase of 4.2% from 2019. Production reached its lowest point in 2019 at 77 300 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 3.1%.

Italy's in-shell almond exports fell for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 278 tonnes, a sharp drop of 42.2% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 70.4%, with an average annual decline of 33.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, France, Germany, and the Netherlands were consistently the main destinations for Italy's in-shell almond exports by volume. France accounted for 54.4% of exports, Germany for 21.9%, and the Netherlands for 11.2%, together making up 87.5% of total export flows.

Italy's in-shell almond export value declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 1 425 thousand US dollars, down 46.0% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 79.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of -40.8%.

Italy imported 1 843 tonnes of in-shell almonds in 2020, a decrease of 19.5% from the previous year. Imports peaked in 2019 at 2 289 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 10.3%. From 2017 to 2020, imports fell by 12.5%, averaging an annual decline of 4.3%.

Imports reached their highest point in 2018 at 12 012 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 19.2%. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 13.5%, with an average annual decline of 4.7%.
