The ASEAN market for household and sanitary paper in wide rolls experienced considerable volatility between 2018 and 2023. Volume started at 1.08 million tons in 2018, dropped sharply the following year, then embarked on a three-year recovery to reach a peak of 1.19 million tons in 2022, before contracting again in 2023.

The most pronounced swing occurred in 2019 when market volume fell by 36% to 695 000 tons. This was followed by a gradual rebound, with growth of 14% in 2020, 33% in 2021, and 13% in 2022, pushing volume above the 2018 level. The expansion reversed in 2023, with a 14% decline bringing the market to 1.02 million tons.

In value terms, the market followed a similar path but with even wider swings. The market value dropped by 24% in 2019 to $1.3 billion, then fell further in 2020 to $1.06 billion despite volume growth. The subsequent recovery was strong, with value surging by 52% in 2021 and 38% in 2022 to reach $2.23 billion, before easing to $1.88 billion in 2023.
