Earlier Report Observations

The hop cones and lupulin market in the CIS grew from 3 836 t in 2018 to 4 132 t in 2020, supported by high import dependence with key suppliers from Germany, Belarus, and the United States. The market featured various product forms, including crushed, powdered, and pelletized hops with high lupulin content.

Market volume dipped slightly to 4 084 t in 2021 amid continued reliance on imports, which covered about 97% of demand. A sharp recovery followed in 2022, with the market reaching 4 698 t, driven by a substantial increase in hop imports at the start of the year, particularly from Germany. This period also saw growing interest from large businesses in domestic hop farming, marked by the launch of a deep-processing hop workshop in St. Petersburg and the start of construction on a hop complex in Chuvashia.

In 2023, the market contracted significantly to 3 266 t. This decline coincided with a global reduction in hop production in major supplier countries like the United States and Germany, coupled with a worldwide decrease in hopping rates in brewing, which lowered demand. Although Russia's gross hop harvest rose by 35% in 2023, domestic production still met only about 5% of the requirement, while import supplies fell. Construction of a modern hop complex in Chuvashia, scheduled for launch in November 2024, continued, aiming to reduce import dependence in the medium term.
