In 2024, rainy weather conditions in key producing regions led to lower honey yields per beehive. Consumer preferences continued to shift towards organic and specialty honeys, supporting premium segments, while new EU packaging regulations began affecting the food retail supply chain.

Europe's honey production has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, European honey production reached 379.3 thousand tonnes, marking a 4.2% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 6.8%, with an average annual decline of 2.3%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 413.9 thousand tonnes. The largest year-on-year decrease occurred in 2019, with a drop of 4.3%, while the largest increase was seen in 2018, with a rise of 1.7%.

Following two years of growth, honey production in Europe experienced a decline. In 2020, the value of honey production in Europe was 2 891 million US dollars, representing a sharp 29.9% decrease compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production value increased by 5.5%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 1.8%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 4 125 million US dollars. The largest year-on-year increase occurred in 2018, with a rise of 27.5%.

Exports honey from Europe

Exports in kind, K t

After two consecutive years of decline, Europe's honey export volumes rebounded. In 2020, exports reached 121.1 thousand tonnes, showing a significant 58.9% increase compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 9.6%, with an average annual decline of 3.3%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 76.2 thousand tonnes. The largest year-on-year decrease occurred in 2018, with a drop of 24.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, European honey was exported to a diverse range of markets. Even the top three destinations—the United States, Switzerland, and Saudi Arabia—collectively accounted for only 8.0% of total export volumes.

Following two years of contraction, Europe's honey export value increased. In 2020, Europe exported honey worth 923 million US dollars, reflecting a 16.3% rise compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, export value grew by 2.3%, equivalent to an average annual increase of 0.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 794 million US dollars. The largest year-on-year decline occurred in 2019, with a decrease of 6.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, the value of honey exports from Europe was distributed relatively evenly across markets. The United States (4.3% of export value), Saudi Arabia (3.3%), and Switzerland (2.8%) together accounted for just 10.3% of total export flows.

In 2020, Europe imported 232.0 thousand tonnes of honey, representing a slight 1.7% increase compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, import volumes decreased by 3.8%, with an average annual decline of 1.3%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 228.2 thousand tonnes, while the highest was in 2018 at 276.9 thousand tonnes. The largest year-on-year decrease occurred in 2019, with a drop of 17.6%, whereas the largest increase was in 2018, with a rise of 14.8%.
