From 2018 to 2021, the Slovak market for gypsum, anhydrite and limestone contracted in physical terms, with volume falling from 2 978 thousand tonnes to 2 040 thousand tonnes. The market has traditionally been characterized by the dominance of natural gypsum products, valued for their ecological properties and resistance to mold. The decline accelerated in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted construction activity and industrial demand, contributing to a 6% drop in volume that year. In value terms, however, the market size grew by 29% in 2020 to $22.7 million, likely reflecting changes in prices or product mix.

The market experienced a sharp rebound in 2022, with volume surging 70% to 3 459 thousand tonnes. This was followed by an even steeper collapse in 2023, when volume halved to 1 626 thousand tonnes. A partial recovery occurred in 2024, with volume reaching 1 839 thousand tonnes. The value of the market followed a similar volatile pattern, peaking at $26.9 million in 2022 before falling to $17.4 million in 2023 and recovering to $19.7 million in 2024.

Between 2017 and 2020, production fell by 10.6%, averaging an annual decline of 3.7%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 31 775 K $ US, which marked a 28.2% increase. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 23.1%.

Slovakia's production volume of gypsum, anhydrite, and limestone declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, 2 410 K t were produced, showing a 10.3% decrease from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production decreased by 24%, averaging an annual decline of 8.7%. The peak volume was recorded in 2018 at 3 469 K t, which represented a 9.4% increase. The largest decline was in 2019, with a drop of 22.5%.

Gypsum, anhydrite, and limestone exports from Slovakia declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, Slovakia exported 315.3 K t, a sharp reduction of 33.9% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 51%, with a compound annual growth rate of -21.2%.

The export market showed an unstable trend throughout the period. Exports peaked in 2018 at 14 466 K $ US, which was a 20.5% increase, and then fell to a trough in 2020 at 2 478 K $ US, representing a dramatic decline of 72.8% from the previous year. Overall, exports changed by a factor of 5.8 from the peak in 2018 to the low in 2020.

Between 2017 and 2020, imports rose by 34%, averaging an annual growth rate of 10.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 2 017 K $ US, which represented an 11.5% decline.
