Following a contraction in 2019 to 565 thousand tons, the Slovak market for asphalt paving mixtures entered a phase of sustained growth from 2020 to 2022. The initial decline coincided with the introduction of new technical and quality conditions TKP 6 for compacted asphalt mixtures in late 2019, which established stricter parameters for public procurement and production, likely causing a temporary adjustment period in the industry. Concurrently, reinforced requirements limiting the transport distance of fresh mixtures to a maximum of 60 km from the production site aimed to preserve quality but may have initially constrained supply logistics.

Market volume recovered to 643 thousand tons in 2020, supported by the development of polymer-modified asphalt mixes designed to offer better resistance to temperature fluctuations and frost cracks. Growth accelerated in the following years, reaching 816 thousand tons by 2022. This expansion was fueled by the adoption of advanced production technologies, including low-temperature asphalt mixes based on foam asphalt and special additives like Chemoran CWM, which improved workability and reduced energy consumption. The launch of new product segments, such as quiet asphalt to reduce traffic noise, further broadened the market's applications and supported demand.

In value terms, the market stabilized around $38 million in 2019-2020 before rising sharply to $48 million in 2021 and $63 million in 2022. This increase in market value reflects the industry's shift towards higher-value mixtures, such as polymer-modified and low-temperature types, which offer enhanced performance and align with evolving environmental and stringent quality standards embedded in regulations like TKP 6 and STN EN 13108.

Slovakia's asphalt paving mixtures and blocks exports have declined for two consecutive years. In 2018, exports peaked at 8,376 tonnes, a 66.5% increase. By 2020, export volume had dropped to 3,804 tonnes, a dramatic 40.1% fall from 2019. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 24.4%, with an annualized decline rate of 8.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Czechia was the dominant buyer of asphalt paving mixtures and blocks from Slovakia, accounting for 73.6% of total exports in volume, while other countries shared the remaining portion.

Slovakia's asphalt paving mixtures and blocks exports have declined for the second year in a row. In 2018, exports reached a high of 2,876 thousand US dollars, up 3.1%. By 2020, exports had fallen to 1,723 thousand US dollars, a 37.4% decrease from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports dropped by 38.3%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 14.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 52.1%, with an annualized growth rate of 15.0%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 47.7%, with an annualized rate of 13.9%.
