Between 2018 and 2019, the Romanian market for gypsum, anhydrite and limestone remained stable at around 4.08 million tonnes. This stability was underpinned by ongoing extraction at deposits such as Băița in Bihor and Baia Sprie in Maramureș, coupled with steady demand from construction, agriculture, and industrial applications. The use of limestone from Cluj, Sălaj, Alba, and Brașov counties for building and finishing works also contributed to maintaining market volumes.

Market volume then declined to 3.78 million tonnes in 2020 and saw only a marginal increase to 3.79 million tonnes in 2021. A more pronounced contraction followed in 2022, reducing the market size to 3.21 million tonnes.

The downward trend continued into 2023, with volumes reaching a low of 2.59 million tonnes. However, 2024 marked a significant recovery, with the market volume rebounding to 3.65 million tonnes.

Production gypsum, anhydrite and limestone in Romania

Romania's production of gypsum, anhydrite, and limestone increased in value for the third consecutive year. In 2020, output was valued at 44 505 thousand US dollars, marking a modest 5.3% increase compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production grew by 15.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.9%.
