This growth was primarily driven by increasing regional demand for groundnut oil, with Iraq's own production and consumption of the oil rising steadily. The expansion of crude groundnut oil exports, which grew at an average annual pace of 44.6%, reflected scaled-up processing capacity that directly boosted output of oil-cake as a by-product. Technological improvements in extraction, particularly solvent-based methods that reduce residual oil in the cake, enhanced both yield and quality.

Concurrent shifts in consumer preferences toward healthier edible oils and the implementation of stricter food safety regulations further supported the groundnut oil sector, which in turn sustained the growth of the related oil-cake market.

Iraq's groundnut oil-cake production has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 6 153 tonnes, marking a 13.9% increase compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 39.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 11.8%.
